Unlocking your energy sources

Updated: Oct 7, 2024

It’s been a busy week for the EmpowHer team with lots of exciting prep and ‘discovery calls’ for the next cohort of our online coaching program EmpowHer.6 (next round starts next week!). Plus we ran another group class for equestrians and signed up some new PT clients. To say I was a little tired this morning is an understatement but there is still work to be done and I know exercise and getting out on my bike gives me energy so that’s exactly what I did.

Riding my bike is more than just a physical activity; it's my mental sanctuary where I can escape the demands of the day. Spinning up a challenging hill helps me to dissipate the feeling of tension and build-up of lactate in my muscles. The cool rush of air against my face, the warmth of the sun on my skin and the rhythmic movement create a perfect trifecta that calms my mind and allows me to enter a state of effortless focus, (known as flow) where everything else fades away… This got me thinking about the nature of energy and how important it is to understand what gives us energy and what drains it.

What is Energy?

Energy, in its simplest form, is the capacity to do work. In the context of our daily lives, it's what fuels our physical, mental and emotional activities. Just like a phone needs a charged battery to function, we need a consistent supply of energy to navigate our responsibilities, pursue our passions and enjoy life.

Sources of Energy

Being able to identify what gives you energy is important for maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life. Here are some common sources of energy:

  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise, such as cycling, walking, or running and strength training significantly boosts your energy. Physical movement increases endorphins, improves circulation, and enhances overall vitality.

  • Nature: Spending time outdoors, whether in a park, a field, or by the sea, can rejuvenate your spirit. Nature has a calming effect, reducing stress and recharging our mental batteries.

  • Social Interactions: Engaging in meaningful conversations and connections with others can be incredibly energising. Whether it's spending time with family, friends, or even colleagues, positive social interactions lift our spirits.

  • Creative Activities: Hobbies like painting, writing, playing music, or any creative endeavour can serve as great energy sources. Engaging in creative activities stimulates the mind and brings joy.

  • Rest and Relaxation: Never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep or some quiet downtime. Proper rest restores our physical and mental energy, preparing us for the day ahead.

Energy Drains

Just as important as recognising what gives us energy is identifying what drains it. Here are some common energy drains:

  • Excessive Screen Time: Spending too much time on phones, computers, or watching TV can leave us feeling drained. The constant stimulation and blue light can disrupt our natural energy flow.

  • Negative Relationships: Toxic or draining relationships can sap our emotional energy. It's important to set boundaries and surround ourselves with supportive and positive people.

  • Stress and Worry: Chronic stress and anxiety can be major energy drains. Finding ways to manage stress, such as through mindfulness, exercise, or therapy, can help maintain energy levels.

  • Poor Diet: Eating unhealthy foods or not eating enough can lead to energy slumps. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and proteins can help sustain energy throughout the day.

  • Clutter and Disorganisation: A cluttered space or a chaotic schedule can lead to mental exhaustion. Keeping a tidy environment and organising tasks can help preserve energy.

Finding Your Balance

Recognising and nurturing your personal energy sources is so important for maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life. By understanding what energises you and removing what drains you, you can boost your overall well-being and lead a more vibrant life.
